Kokoro Nikki listens
It doesn't grade you. It hands back what it noticed: the word you kept repeating, the tone that shifted on Tuesday.
Your landscape appears
Over the weeks, your inner landscape paints itself — a sumi-e picture only you can read.

A letter
I built Kokoro Nikki because I needed a place with no demands, too.
I tried dozens of journaling apps, and every one asked something of me: a streak, a score, a goal. I just wanted to understand what was going on inside.
This app is made by one person, not a data company. Your diary isn't my business model — it's your diary.
Rooted in Japanese Culture
Kokoro Nikki draws from centuries of Japanese journaling tradition. From zuihitsu (随筆) essays to seasonal awareness (kisetsukan), every detail honors the art of introspection.

Is Kokoro Nikki free?
The annual plan comes with a 7-day free trial. You start it through the App Store or Google Play, so a payment method is required. On day 7 it converts automatically to the paid annual subscription unless you cancel before then, and you can cancel anytime from your store subscription settings. The monthly plan is a direct purchase with no trial. If you decide not to subscribe, your existing entries stay readable and you can export them whenever you want. There are no ads.
How is Kokoro Nikki different from other journaling apps?
In plain terms: Kokoro Nikki does not require an account — there is no sign-up, login, password or email. Your entries are stored only on your phone, with no cloud sync. When you dictate, your phone's speech recognition turns speech into text (Apple or Google may process it to do so), and the audio recording itself is never uploaded. There are no streaks, missed-day counters or scores, and no countdowns in the paywall. With a subscription, haiku mode counts 5-7-5 live — mora in Japanese, syllables in English and Spanish — and every fourteen days, as long as there are at least 7 entries, the app paints a sumi-e watercolor from the emotions of that fortnight. The whole journal can be exported as a Markdown file, with or without a subscription.
Does it work offline?
For writing and reading, yes. You can write entries and browse your whole history without a connection: your journal lives on your device, so there is nothing waiting to upload when you reconnect. Turning speech into text is done by your phone's built-in speech recognition, which on most devices needs a connection. The emotional analysis of a new entry and the generated landscape images always need one.
How does it protect my privacy?
Your entries are stored only on your device, in the app's private database, and there is no copy of your journal on any server of ours. When you consent to an emotional reading, the text of that entry is sent to our server and on to OpenAI to be read, and is not stored there — no name, email or device identifier travels with it. When you dictate, your phone's speech recognition turns the speech into text, and Apple or Google may process it to do so; the audio file itself is never uploaded. The app never asks you to create an account: there is no login, no password and no email. We never sell or share your data, and your entries sit behind your phone’s own device encryption.
Which languages are supported?
The app is available in Spanish, English, and Japanese. The language you write your journal in is chosen separately, and it guides the emotional analysis, the keyboard and dictation. Haiku mode counts mora in Japanese and syllables in English and Spanish.
What does the AI do with my entries?
It reads the emotional tone of what you wrote and hands back patterns over time. The text is analysed by OpenAI's API, which we call through our own server; per OpenAI's API data policy, API inputs are not used to train models. Nothing that identifies you is sent with the text. They are retained for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring and then deleted.
Can I record entries with my voice?
Yes. You can dictate your entries and your phone's built-in speech recognition turns the speech into text. Depending on your device, Apple or Google may process the audio to do this. The recording itself is never uploaded to us and stays on your phone.
What happens if I stop writing for a few days?
Nothing. We don't use streaks or guilt-driven notifications. We believe in pauses and returns: your journal will be waiting for you when you need it.
Can I cancel the subscription anytime?
Yes, at any time from your App Store or Google Play account settings. You keep access until the end of the paid period.
Can I export my entries?
Yes. From Settings you can export your whole journal as a single Markdown file with a complete JSON block inside it, with or without a subscription, to save it, print it or take it elsewhere.
Who is Kokoro Nikki for?
For anyone who wants to reflect on their emotions calmly, inspired by Japanese aesthetics and philosophy (kintsugi, the seasons, haiku). No Japanese knowledge required.
